What is Electroplating?

Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a coherent metal coating on an electrode. The process of electroplating is primarily used to change the surface properties of an object. This includes aspects like abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities. However, we can also use this process to to build up thickness on undersized parts or to form objects by electro-forming.

The process used in electroplating is called electrode-position. The part we plate is the cathode of the circuit. In one technique, the anode is made of the metal to be plated on the part. We immerse both components in an electrolyte solution containing one or more dissolved metal salts as well as other ions that permit the flow of electricity. A power supply sends direct current to the anode, oxidizing the metal atoms that it comprises and allowing them to dissolve in the solution. At the cathode, the dissolved metal ions in the electrolyte solution are reduced at the interface between the solution and the cathode. This causes them to "plate out" onto the cathode.

Some other electroplating processes use a non-consumable anode such as lead or carbon. When using these techniques, the metal ions that will be plated must be periodically replenished in the bath as they are drawn out of the solution. One common example of electroplating is the creation of coins and pennies. A penny has the copper look, but it is simply a layer of copper over a small zinc plate. Electroplating in general is perfect for antiques in a similar way. We can coat something to make it look new and give it some extra strength.
